Lift Station 27 & Force Main Surge Evaluation & Design

NCS performed an assessment of the 700 gpm sewage lift station and 1.5 miles of 6-inch force main to determine the cause of excessive surges in the pipeline and vibrations at the lift station. This involved a field inspection and computer modeling using Hammer software. NCS determined that the existing design was deficient due to a lack or air release and combination air valves along the force main, and pipe restrictions at the pump station header. This caused the surge issues at the station and pipeline. NCS subsequently designed the upgrades to include these features, along with other upgrades (new header design, valves temporary bypass, new air release and electrical enhancements.

    Pumpback System Evaluation

Scottsdale owns and operates five pumpback lift stations. The large wetwells attenuate flows but also allow the rags to re-accumulate into large masses. Surface scum traps debris and increases ambient Hydrogen Sulfide. Operators perform monthly cleanings that can take hours and necessitate SCBA equipment. NCS performed a pilot study of mixing technologies at the Southeast pumpback station. The air mixers used for this study were successful, reducing monthly cleanings by half and eliminated need for SCBA equipment. NCS prepared drawings for permanent installation, and Scottsdale is planning installations for other pumpback stations and possibly smaller collection system lift stations.

Lift Station 11 & Force Main Surge Evaluation

NCS performed an assessment of the 500 gpm sewage lift station and 0.5 miles of 4-inch force main to determine the cause of excessive surges in the pipeline. This involved a field inspection and computer modeling using Hammer software. NCS determined that the existing design was deficient due to a lack or air release and combination air valves in the force main. NCS evaluated 8 transient modeling scenarios to identify the cause and develop the solution.
